Long before Matalay began to take shape, a community was already growing around Memories Beach.
Surfing has played an important part in that story. Local surfers, families, travellers and friends have gathered here over the years, brought together by waves, music, food and time by the sea. Those connections have helped shape the character of this part of Khao Lak.
The MATALAY Khao Lak Classic 2026 was a celebration of that community and the culture that continues to grow around it.
At the heart of the weekend was surfing, bringing together local talent and surfers from further afield. But the Classic has always been about more than what happens in the water. Live concerts carried the energy into the evening, while local vendors brought food, craft and creativity to the beach. Even four-legged surfers got their moment, with the dog surfing competition adding a little fun to the weekend.
Together, these different parts of the event reflected what makes Memories Beach special. It is a place where people come for different reasons but often end up sharing the same experience.
For Matalay, that matters.
We have always believed that creating something new should not mean replacing what was already here. It should begin by understanding it, protecting what makes it special and creating more opportunities for the people who have helped shape it.
Surf culture is part of the identity of Memories Beach, just as the coastline, landscape and local community are part of the identity of Khao Lak. As Matalay continues to evolve, these existing connections will remain at the heart of what comes next.
The Khao Lak Classic offered a glimpse of the kind of place we hope Matalay will become. A place where local surfers, families, visitors and people from different walks of life naturally find themselves together. Where local businesses have opportunities to participate and where the landscape remains the setting that connects everyone.
For a few days there was competition, music, food and plenty happening along the beach. But the real story was the community around it, one that has been growing here for years.
